Canadian Pondweed Removal from a Castle Moat in South Wales

Cutting and clearing of large amounts of Canadian Pondweed (Elodea), Algae and Debris from various waterbodies around a prominent Castle in South Wales

A Castle in a Modern Setting

This stunning castle, its grounds and surrounding moat sit at the heart of a small South Wales town, with the local community and park having developed around this historic landmark. Today, the site serves several purposes: as an important heritage attraction, a well-used public park and a recreational waterbody used by the local fishing club. With so many people using and enjoying the site, maintaining the condition and appearance of the moat is an important responsibility. Keeping the water clear of excessive aquatic weed and accumulated debris helps preserve its historic setting, maintain usable water for fishing and ensure the castle grounds remain an attractive and welcoming focal point for the wider community.

Aquatic Weed, Algae and Debris

Given the castle’s central location and the number of people using the surrounding park, litter and floating debris had found its way into the moat, becoming trapped amongst vegetation and along the margins. Canadian pondweed had also become established and spread extensively through sections of the waterbody, reducing areas of open water and interfering with fishing. Seasonal algae growth added to the problem, further affecting the appearance and condition of the moat. Together, excessive weed, algae and accumulated debris had significantly affected sections of the waterbody, creating the need for a comprehensive clearance to restore open water and improve the overall condition and appearance of this prominent public and heritage site.

Restoring the Castle Moat

Over a number of days, Aquaclear carried out extensive aquatic weed removal and general waterway clearance across the castle moat. Dense areas of Canadian pondweed were cut, collected and removed alongside accumulated algae, floating debris and litter, progressively reopening congested sections of the waterbody. Using the Truxor allowed our operators to work directly within the moat while carefully navigating its historic surroundings and established banks. The completed works restored substantial areas of open water, improving conditions for the fishing club while leaving a cleaner and more attractive setting for the castle, park and wider community.

Why Carry Out These Works with Truxor

The Truxor is particularly well suited to working within sensitive historic settings. Its lightweight, amphibious design allows it to operate directly within the water with minimal impact on surrounding lawns, banks and landscaped grounds. Its manoeuvrability also enables our operators to work carefully around historic walls, bridges and other structures, carrying out substantial clearance without the disruption associated with larger conventional machinery.
