Duckweed and Debris Removal from a Large Waterbody

Examples of small and large-scale duckweed clearance to restore substantial areas of open water.

Duckweed on UK Waterways

Duckweed is a common floating aquatic plant found across UK ponds, lakes and slow-moving waterways. Under favourable conditions it can spread rapidly, forming dense mats across the water surface that reduce light penetration and suppress submerged plants. On top of being unsightly, heavy coverage can contribute to low dissolved oxygen levels, particularly as plant material dies and decomposes, placing additional stress on fish and other aquatic life. Dense growth can also restrict areas of open water, interfere with recreational use and give ponds an unsightly, stagnant appearance. While duckweed is a natural and valuable part of many freshwater habitats, excessive growth can upset the balance of a waterbody and require active management.

Duckweed Management with Truxors

Using the Truxor’s specialist range of attachments and Aquaclear’s experienced operators, we clear extensive duckweed coverage from ponds, lakes and waterways across the country. Working directly from within the water allows large surface areas to be tackled efficiently, collecting and removing dense floating growth while accessing areas that can be difficult to reach from the bank. The versatility of the Truxor makes it particularly effective on larger or heavily affected waterbodies, where manual clearance would be impractical. Removed material can be gathered and transferred to suitable collection points on the bank, restoring areas of open water and providing an immediate improvement to the appearance and condition of the waterbody.

Other Works and Aftercare

Duckweed clearance can often be carried out alongside other maintenance and restoration works required on the same waterbody. While the Truxor is on site, its range of interchangeable attachments allows our operators to tackle additional issues such as excessive reed and aquatic vegetation, accumulated silt, encroaching marginal growth and restricted channels. Combining these works into a single visit can provide a more complete approach to waterway management while reducing the time, mobilisation and cost involved in bringing specialist machinery to site on separate occasions. Alongside the initial clearance, Aquaclear can advise customers on the ongoing management of their waterbody and the steps that may help reduce future duckweed growth. Drawing on our experience across a wide range of sites, we can identify conditions that may be encouraging excessive growth and recommend practical aftercare and maintenance measures to help keep the waterbody open and manageable following the works.
