Algae and Curly Water Weed Removal from a Swimming Lake
Algae and curly water weed removal from a swimming lake to restore open water and improve the swimming environment.
Curly Waterweed in UK Waters
Curly waterweed (Lagarosiphon major) is a non-native invasive aquatic plant that can cause significant problems in UK ponds, lakes and slow-moving waterways. Its dense submerged growth can dominate large areas of a waterbody, crowding out native plants, restricting water movement and making fishing, boating and other recreational activities difficult. It can also spread readily from plant fragments, meaning poorly managed cutting or disturbance may help establish new growth elsewhere. Once established, its rapid growth and ability to regenerate can make long-term management particularly challenging.
Effective management of curly waterweed requires careful cutting and, importantly, the collection of the vegetation as it is removed. Using the Truxor, dense submerged growth can be cut across large areas of a waterbody before the loose material is gathered and removed from the water. Particular care is taken to minimise and capture plant fragments, as curly waterweed can regenerate from relatively small pieces and spread into previously unaffected areas. Works are carefully timed and followed by ongoing monitoring, with repeat management carried out where necessary to gradually bring established growth under control and maintain usable areas of open water.
Swimming Lake Clearance
This swimming lake had become heavily affected by excessive algae and curly waterweed, with dense growth spreading across large areas of the waterbody. As conditions deteriorated, access to clear open water became increasingly difficult, leaving the lake unsuitable for its intended recreational use. The lake was used by both the property owners and guests staying in holiday accommodation around the site, making it an important part of the visitor experience. The timing of the works was therefore carefully considered to manage the vegetation at an appropriate point in its growth cycle while returning the lake to use when it was needed most.
Aquaclear carried out extensive cutting, collection and removal of curly waterweed alongside clearance of accumulated algae. Large quantities of aquatic vegetation were removed from the waterbody, reopening substantial areas of clear water and significantly improving the appearance, accessibility and recreational use of the lake.
