Creating Wetland Habitat from a Flood Plain
Conversion of a flood plain into a series of shallow ponds and pools to create valuable wetland habitat for wading birds and other wildlife.
Creating a Series of Wetland Scrapes
At Llanfyllin, we were commissioned to convert an area of flood plain into a series of small ponds and shallow pools.
The works involved excavating the flood plain to create a varied wetland landscape, with areas of differing depth and shape designed to hold water naturally across the site.
Creating a network of connected wet areas provided a more diverse habitat than the existing flood plain, while making use of the site's natural tendency to retain water.

Creating Habitat for Wading Birds
The completed scrapes were designed to provide suitable feeding and resting areas for wading birds, while also creating new habitat for insects, amphibians and other water-based wildlife.
The shallow margins and varied water levels create a range of conditions across the site, supporting a greater diversity of wetland species and allowing the habitat to develop naturally over time.
The project demonstrates how targeted earthworks can turn otherwise underused flood plain into valuable wildlife habitat.
