Managing Silt Through the Winter Months

Winter silt pumping works using temporary semi-permeable membranes to manage dredged material on challenging sites.

Temporary Silt Containment

Over the winter months, our team carried out a number of silt pumping projects where temporary containment was required to manage the material safely on site. Where surrounding ground conditions were too uneven for conventional de-silting bags, semi-permeable membranes provided a practical alternative. The membranes were installed to contain the pumped silt while allowing water to drain away naturally. This approach allowed works to continue through the winter while minimising disruption to the surrounding site and providing a controlled area for the material to settle and dry.

Drying and Site Restoration

Once the pumping works were complete, the temporary membranes were left in place while the retained silt gradually dried during the warmer months. Allowing the material to dry on site provided flexibility in how it could subsequently be managed. Depending on the requirements of each location, the dried silt could be removed from site or retained and allowed to green over naturally. The method provided an efficient solution for sites where ground conditions, access or space made traditional de-silting methods unsuitable.
